PLASIEC FELICITATES WITH NIGERIANS AT 65; REITERATES COMMITMENT TO GRASSROOTS DEMOCRACY
The Chairman of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), Mr. Plangji Daniel Cishak, has congratulated Nigerians on the nation's 65th Independence Anniversary.
The Chairman stated that this year's theme, as released by the Federal Government, “All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” serves as a call to action. He emphasized that the theme underscores the critical importance of every citizen, institution, and tier of government contributing their quota to national development.
While describing the anniversary as a moment to celebrate Nigeria's resilience and 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, Cishak also acknowledged that the country continues to grapple with economic challenges. He called for improved and collective efforts to overcome these hurdles.
Weighing in on the national debate concerning State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs), the PLASIEC Chairman stressed the need for constructive reforms rather than outright scrapping, affirming their indispensable role in deepening grassroots democracy. He elaborated that the credibility of elections directly impacts the legitimacy of governments and, by extension, the stability and progress of the nation.
Reaffirming PLASIEC's dedication, Cishak pledged that the Commission would continue to uphold the highest standards of credibility and transparency. He cited the recent release of the 2026 Notice of Election Timetable, which demonstrates PLASIEC's resolve to maintain a predictable electoral cycle in line with global best practices.
The Chairman further urged all eligible citizens to actively participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reminding the public that voter registration is a fundamental civic duty and the foundation of meaningful democratic participation.
While paying tribute to Nigeria's founding fathers, Cishak expressed optimism that with courage, resilience, and unity, the nation's diversity would remain a source of strength for generations to come.
Congratulations, Nigeria at 65!
